The Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, renewed his call for the establishment of a ceasefire observers group within the United Nations Support Mission in Libya.
In a report to the Security Council, according to the French Press Agency, Guterres called for granting the United Nations Support Mission in Libya a clear mandate, backed by additional resources, to allow the deployment of the mission’s observers in Libya in Sirte and the surrounding areas.
Guterres explained that the observers team will work in close coordination with the 5 + 5 Joint Military Committee and its joint subcommittees, and that their role is limited to monitoring ceasefire violations, and this requires their participation in the field.
“Guterres” indicated that the observers team will contribute to the training of the Libyan observers, who are affiliated with the 5 + 5 committee, calling in return for the Libyan parties to undertake to protect the United Nations personnel, equipment and facilities at all times.
It is worth noting that the 5 + 5 Joint Military Committee agreed on the 23rd of last October to cease fire in Libya and remove all mercenaries and foreign fighters.
