Amnesty International said that the armed group controlling eastern Libya (Haftar’s militias) have failed to arrest Mahmoud Al-Werfali, who is wanted by the International Criminal Court for killing 33 people, but rather promoted him to a lieutenant colonel in the “special forces”.
The organization revealed in – a report prepared on the tenth anniversary of the February 17th revolution – Wednesday, that Haftar’s militias are still continuing to harbor the leaders of the “Al Kani Militia” despite having committed mass killings and torture in the city of Tarhuna.
And Amnesty International indicated that the Libyan authorities gave promotion and legitimized militia leaders responsible for the horrific acts, instead of ensuring accountability and providing compensation for violations committed since the fall of the Gaddafi regime.
In the same context, the deputy director of the Middle East and North Africa regional office at the organization, Diana Al-Tahawi, called on the parties of the conflict in Libya and the upcoming unity government to ensure that those suspected of committing crimes under international law are not appointed to positions where they can continue to commit violations and entrench impunity , Stressing the need to suspend the work of individuals accused of war crimes in positions of authority pending the results of independent and effective investigations.
It is worth noting that, in July 2019, the commander of the aggression against Tripoli, Khalifa Haftar, gave promotion to Mahmoud al-Werfalli wanted by the International Criminal Court for committing war crimes, to the rank of lieutenant colonel, and sheltered the Al-Kani militia after fleeing Tarhuna.
