The European Union denies providing marine equipment to the Libyan Coast Guard.

The European Union denied, on Wednesday, that it provided any marine equipment to the Coast Guard in Libya, as part of the training it provides to increase the efficiency and capabilities of its members to control the country’s borders.

A spokesman for the union said that Brussels provides support and assistance to enhance the operational capabilities of the Coast Guard and the Coastal Security Department in Libya, in order to prevent further human losses in the Mediterranean, and to control human smuggling networks, according to the Russian news agency “Sputnik”.

The spokesman added that the union had provided a series of exercises for members of the Libyan Coast Guard, and had also reconditioned two of its vessels.

It is worth noting that the European Union allocated 57.2 million euros as support for the European Border Management Program, as Libya is a transit country for migrants from Africa.
