The United Nations Acting Representative in Libya Stephanie Williams said, on Sunday, that the international community can play an important role in supporting the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum and ensuring its success by urging the Libyan parties to participate constructively and confront potential obstructions by imposing sanctions on them.
In statements to the Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper, Williams added that the declaration of a ceasefire by the President of the Presidential Council, Fayez Al-Sarraj and the Tobruk Parliament, Aqeela Saleh, paved the way for holding a second round of the Libyan Political Forum in the coming weeks.
Williams indicated that the arms embargo violations in Libya have receded, but have not stopped, indicating that there is now an opportunity for a Libyan-Libyan consensus around a new comprehensive political framework that leads to presidential and parliamentary elections that end the war, as she put it.
In a related context, Williams stated that the mission was not aware of the agreement to resume oil production between the Vice President of the Presidential Council Ahmed Maiteeq and Haftar’s son, but she welcomed the lifting of force majeure from the oil ports.
It is worth noting that the dialogue sessions between the delegations of the Supreme Council of State and representatives of the Tobruk Parliament in the Moroccan city of bo Zniqa are continuing to agree on the criteria for selecting the occupants of the sovereign positions, according to the Skhirat Agreement, according to a joint statement of the two delegations on Saturday.
