The Algerian newspaper, Al-Hiwar, reported, Friday, that a number of African countries refused to name the Bulgarian “Nikolai Mladenov” as a new UN envoy to Libya.
The newspaper quoted an African diplomat at the United Nations saying that we are not against anyone, but we want an African to assume this position.
The Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, suggested appointing the former Ghanaian foreign minister, “Hanna Tette,” a UN envoy to Libya, but the United States refused the nomination, according to the newspaper.
It is noteworthy that the former UN envoy to Libya, Ghassan Salama, resigned from his post last March, and that the Bulgarian candidate, “Nikolay Mladenov,” is currently holding the position of the United Nations Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process.
