A UN report stated that 9,500 immigrants left Libya from the period between March 1 to July 31, of whom 13% were children, and that most of the trips originated from the cities of Tripoli and Zawiya.
The report indicated that 82% of these immigrants are men and 5% women. The report affirms that this year has witnessed a remarkable increase in immigrants compared to last year, which reached 6,636 immigrants from Libya to Europe.
The report indicated that according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, the Libyan Coast Guard rescued 45% of the migrants in the Libyan and Maltese search and rescue areas, noting that 168 refugees and migrants died at sea.
In the same context, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, expressed his fear of coordinated operations to repel migrant boats by using special ships to return them to Libya, saying that the latter is not considered a safe place to land.
It is noteworthy that the International Organization for Migration announced in early September the return of 76 asylum seekers from the open sea, including 4 women and two children, by the Coast Guard.
