The representative of the United States of America at the Security Council, “Kelly Craft” confirmed that there is no place for foreign mercenaries or proxy forces in Libya, including the “Wagner” mercenaries of the Russian Ministry of Defense, which are fighting alongside and supporting Haftar, according to her saying.
During the Security Council session on Wednesday, Kraft welcomed the announcement by the head of the reconciliation government, Fayez Al-Sarraj, and the Speaker of the Tobruk Parliament, Aqila Saleh, of the initiative to cease fire and disarm, resume operations in the oil sector and return to political talks, noting that a political solution will be difficult to obtain if external supporters continue to feed the Conflict in Libya.
Kraft called on all parties involved in the conflict to abide by what they pledged at the Berlin conference, to immediately suspend military operations, to stop the continuous transfer of fighters and foreign military equipment to Libya and to allow local authorities to respond to the Coronavirus, urging member states of the Security Council to continue sharing information with the team of experts in Libya regarding Potential violations of the arms embargo.
“Kraft” stressed her country’s opposition to any plan aimed at dividing Libya or its occupation or imposing a foreign political settlement on the Libyans, reiterating that there is no military solution to the Libyan crisis.
“Kraft” stated that the United States is still astonished by reports that new mass graves have been discovered in Tarhuna, welcoming the appointment of a commission to uncover the facts.
It is worth noting that a United Nations report said Wednesday that Russia had strengthened its logistical support for the “Wagner” mercenaries in Libya, with about 338 military cargo flights coming from Syria in the last nine months of this year.
