The World Health Organization said Wednesday that it is looking forward to reviewing the clinical trials of a potential emerging corona virus vaccine developed by Russia.
And Russian President Vladimir Putin announced Tuesday that Russia is the first country to ratify an anti-Covid-19 vaccine, although the final-stage tests, which include more than 2,000 people, were scheduled to begin Wednesday.
The World Health Organization says that 28 of more than 150 experimental vaccines are currently being tested on humans, of which six have reached the third stage, which is the final stage in which the candidate product is tested on large groups of people.
The Russian vaccine, developed by Gamalia Research Institute and the Russian Ministry of Defense, is among 28 vaccines that reached the third stage, but the World Health Organization is including it in the first stage.
The World Health Organization said in a statement that it is “in contact with Russian scientists and the Russian authorities and looks forward to reviewing the details of the experiments.”
It added that she “welcomes all developments in the ongoing research on vaccines against Covid-19 and in the field of vaccine development.”
It said it has been directing and accelerating research and development efforts since January.
The statement said, “Vaccine research should be accelerated by following specific processes during each development step, to ensure that any vaccines that ultimately enter production are safe and effective.”
“Any safe and effective pandemic vaccine would be represent a global public good, and it urges the World Health Organization to provide rapid, fair and equitable access to any such vaccines throughout the world,” it said.
