France 24 said in a report on Tuesday that the GNA forces seizure of all of the west of Libya had thwarted Haftar’s efforts to resolve the conflict militarily.
The report added that Turkey’s support for the reconciliation government has rebalanced the forces on the ground against Haftar, who appears to be very weak after his military losses. This forced his Egyptian and Russian allies to favor diplomatic solutions, and led to the withdrawal of hundreds of Russian mercenaries from the Tripoli frontlines in mid-May.
The channel quoted political analyst at the European Council for International Relations, Tariq Majrisi, as saying that Egypt and Russia are working together on political alternatives to Haftar that could save their influence in eastern Libya.
It is worth noting that the Libyan army forces announced, on June 5, the liberation of the entire western region, following the liberation of southern Tripoli and Tarhuna Haftar’s last stronghold in the west.
