The United Nations envoy to Libya Ghassan Salameh, on Monday, said that he will rely on what is decided at the National Conference, which is going to be held in early 2019 for the elections expected in the first half of next year.
“We want to ask at the national conference what kind of elections the Libyan people want, parliamentary or presidential, and what kind of law they want,” Salama said in an interview with Reuters.
Salama stressed that the National Congress must be in Libya, and a survey showed that 80% of Libyans want the elections to end the division between the competing Libyan administrations.
The UN envoy said he hoped the Palermo conference would press the House of Representatives (HOR) to pass the election law. “The House of Representatives has been unproductive and has not produced a law… I think we need a greater representation for Libyans,” he said.
He called for the safety of the central bank to consolidate the dinar exchange rate against the dollar, to prevent armed groups from buying the dollar at a cheap price, and sell it on the black market at a much higher price.
The UN envoy to Libya, Ghassan Salama, said in his briefing to the UN Security Council on 8 November that the elections should be held in Libya in March after the convening of the National Convention early next year.
