The United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR) said on Tuesday it was “concerned about the eviction” of 370 Tawergha families from their camp on Trik Al-Matar in Tripoli.
The agency said on its official website that what it called “militias”, expelled 1,900 displaced persons from their Tripoli camp where they have been living since 2011.
The camp residents were forced to flee after ” three nights of indiscriminate raiding and the arbitrary arrest of 94 residents”, said the UN agency, adding that the residents sought to stay with relatives, or in other camps.
The Commission expressed its concern at the repeated expulsion of these displaced persons, calling for respect for human rights and the protection of civilians, noting that it was following the situation closely and communicating with all parties to ensure that the basic needs of the internally displaced were met and that any further evictions were avoided in the future.
The UNHCR has announced that in Libya, there are about 192 thousand internally displaced persons, and is working to return them to their homes in a voluntary and safe manner.
