UNSMIL condemns “Forced eviction” of Tawergha camp

The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) condemned on Friday the “forced eviction” of displaced families from the Tawergha camp at Airport Road early Friday morning and left them homeless for the second time in seven years.

In a statement posted on the mission’s website, Ghassan Salame, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in Libya said that entering the displaced persons camp, “destroying homes while people sleeping, forcing them to flee and leaving them homeless” constitutes “a violation of their dignity and right to protection”, which the international human rights law stand for.

UNSMIL stressed Libya’s commitment to preventing displacement, protecting and assisting displaced people, and finding lasting solutions for them, calling on the authorities to provide shelter and protection to evacuees.

On Friday, the Tawergha refugee camp was raided and evacuated from its residents.
