GNA Foreign Minister calls for special lifting of arms embargo on Libya

The Government of National Accord (GNA) Foreign Minister, Mohammad Al-Sayala called for an exceptional lifting of the arms embargo on Libya, during a speech at the International Conference on Combating Terrorism and Preventing Extremism held in the Tajikistan capital, Dushanbe.

In his speech on Friday, Al-Sayala stressed the necessity of supporting Libya’s request to the Security Council to exclude it from the embargo, to enable it to supply some types of weapons and equipment to combat terrorism, and to equip the Presidential Guard and the Coast Guard.

Al-Sayala said that the decision to ban arms supplies to Libya under the pretext of not using them to ignite the civil war has had a great impact on its ability to resist terrorist operations, pointing to the treacherous terrorist act that targeted the headquarters of the Higher National Elections Commission (HNEC) in Tripoli, which left 14 people dead and 20 injured.

Seventeen countries and five representatives of regional and international organizations attended the conference, which aims at uniting efforts to confront terrorism and extremism and strengthen mechanisms of cooperation against online terrorism.
