The International Quartet on Libya affirmed on Monday the importance of holding parliamentary and presidential elections in a constitutional framework before the end of the year, according to the UN mission in Libya.
The Quartet, which are the League of Arab States (LAS), the African Union (AU), the European Union (EU) and the United Nations (UN), stressed in a statement on the sovereignty, independence and unity of Libya and its territorial integrity, stressing its support for the Presidential Council (PC) and the UN plan of action in Libya.
The four parties welcomed efforts to unify the security services and urged the House of Representatives (HOR) and the High Council of State (HCS) to continue their dialogue and work together.
The group called on all Libyan parties to take responsibility and continue their cooperation with the UN special envoy to Libya, Ghassan Salame to implement the UN plan in a consensual manner.
The Quartet noted the importance of addressing Libya’s economic challenges and the provision of basic services through equal distribution of state resources throughout the country, calling for the completion of the budget for 2018.
The International Quartet includes the Secretary General of the League of Arab States, Ahmed Aboul-Gheit, the AU High Representative to Mali and the Coast, Pierre Buyoya, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Federica Mogherini, and UN Special Envoy to Libya, Ghassan Salame.
