US lawmakers call for continuation of US strikes in Libya

US lawmakers stressed the need for continued US air strikes in Libya to prevent the country from being a haven for terrorism and to maintain unity and integrity.

The lawmakers, as reported by Voice of America radio on Saturday said, “Islamic State and Al Qaeda” are flourishing and reorganizing their ranks in Libya, taking advantage of the security vacuum and the absence of power in the country.

A spokesperson for the US command in Africa, “AFRICOM”, Karl J. Wiest said that a number of US forces exchange information with local forces; to help counter terrorist groups, according to Voice of America.

In addition, US lawmaker, Ileana Ros-Lehtinen said it is time to appoint a new US ambassador in Libya, and the opening of the US embassy in Tripoli; to increase presence on the ground.

The American Command in Africa, announced in 2016, participate in the war to liberate Sirte from the grip of IS, in coordination with the Government of National Accord (GNA).
