Nuclear Research Center denies entry of food contaminated with nuclear radiation

The director of the Nuclear Research Center, Al-Hashmi Al-Abyad denied on Friday reports suggesting food items in violation of Libyan specifications have been directed to the Center and entered through Tripoli port.

Al-Abyad told ArraedLG, the shipment of “Lipton” tea has a harmless amount of radiation, but if it could cause damage if was heavily consumed, explaining that the shipment did not violate the Libyan standards.

Al-Abyad noted that the Nuclear Research Center is responsible for handling the shipment in the warehouses of the center in an internationally approved manner. He called on media to report on matters with truthfulness and responsibility before circulating news that would cause chaos in the country.

Some media outlets, TVs and news agencies have reported the suspension of food items that have been exposed to nuclear radiation.
