The head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), Ghassan Salame affirmed, during a meeting with a delegation from the city of Al-Zawia in the headquarters of the mission in Tripoli, the need for a constitutional framework before the upcoming elections.
The mayor of Al-Zawia, Abdulkareem Al-Aba’ told ArraedLG, Salame said the registration process must be completed and a referendum law should be issued before the referendum on the constitution is implemented, stressing the need to combat corruption, reduce foreign interference in internal Libyan affairs and return all displaced people.
Salame said on Wednesday, at the first press conference from the headquarters of the mission in Tripoli since the evacuation of its crew in 2014, the mission respects the constitution draft and is waiting for the Supreme Court’s decision to seek credible elections.
Salame said not to ignore the humanitarian and economic aspects of Libya, adding that solving Libya’s political crisis is “a challenge” in a country with 20 million piece of weapons.
The UN envoy pointed out that the solution lies in the creation of a single government and a unified army and police, stressing their work to reduce the spread of weapons, raising the rates of integration of militants in public life, reducing foreign interventions and arms smuggling.
The head of the UNSMIL, Ghassan Salame said appropriate conditions are a must before the elections, to ensure their success and integrity.
