African Union:  Libya should not rush into elections

The commissioner of the African Union’s (AU) Peace and Security Council, Smail Chergui called on the Libyan authorities to “not rush for elections,” which the United Nations (UN) seeks to establish; to end the division in Libya.

Chergui told journalists on the sidelines of an African Union summit, we agree with the UN special envoy to Libya, Ghassan Salame that “this conflict is so complicated and difficult that none of the organizations can solve it by its own,” according to Reuters.

The Commissioner said the AU members see the need to prepare solid grounds to hold stable and fair elections, the results of which is respected by all parties, according to Reuters.

The Commissioner of the AU Peace and Security Council added that the UN and the AU would seek to support reconciliation and “create the basic conditions for elections.”

The High National Elections Commission (HNEC) opened in December, voter registration; in preparation for the upcoming elections.
