EU: Disposal of Libya’s chemical materials and weapons “a positive step”

The European Union (EU) welcomed the declaration of the complete destruction of the second type of chemical materials coming from Libya by the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), describing it as a “positive step”.

The spokeswoman for the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini said on Monday, that the disposal of these weapons and materials came at the request of the Government of National Accord (GNA), according to the Italian news agency AKI.

Mogherini confirmed the EU’s commitment to continue assisting the process of eliminating chemical weapons from Libya, noting a contract worth 3.3 million euros was signed to help the organization to decontaminate the sites where weapons were stored.

Libya’s Foreign Ministry announced On Thursday, that Libya had completed the destruction of its remaining stockpiles of chemical weapons in full.
