The United Nations appeals to the countries of the world to receive more than a thousand immigrants from Libya

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) appealed to the world to receive 1,300 migrants stranded in Libya after being “ill-treated during their detention in difficult conditions in Libya.”

UNHCR said that Niger had agreed to temporarily host the most vulnerable migrants, unaccompanied children and mothers with their children- as reported by reuters.

The UNHCR said that it planned to evacuate between 700 and 1,300 people from Libya to Niger by the end of January, demanding the provision of resettlement places.

Assistant High Commissioner for Protection Volker Turk stated that “this is an urgent call for solidarity and humanity”, adding that “the organization is working to bring refugees at great risk from Libya as soon as possible”.

In turn, the Swiss authorities have announced their willingness to host more than 80 thousand migrants, which the UNHCR wants to extract from Libya.
