On Sunday the head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya, Ghassan Salame, said that “human rights violations in Libya” are disturbing due to the lack of legal accountability for them.
On the occasion of International Human Rights Day, Salame said that in 2017 alone, at least 365 Libyan people, including 79 children, had been killed or injured as a result of indiscriminate shooting in residential areas, air strikes and explosive ordnance. Additionally, the lives of doctors and patients were put at risk due to attacks on 14 health facilities.
Salama said the mission documented 201 illegal killings and executions of people held by armed groups, noting that thousands of people are being held in Libya illegally.
The UN envoy said that in 2017, they identified 24 attacks and violations against journalists and activists. He praised the role of Libyans and their efforts to promote human rights throughout their country.
He called on the head of the United Nations support in Libya to address what he described as “grave violations” suffered by illegal immigrants in Libya, praising the solidarity of many Libyans with migrants and with human rights.
It is noteworthy that the United Nations Support Mission in Libya had documented the deaths of six dead and 10 wounded civilians during the month of November.
