Africa Intelligence: Egypt has reduced its support for Haftar because it does not want a direct confrontation with Turkey in Libya.

The French intelligence website Africa Intelligence reported that Egypt has begun to reduce its support for Haftar, and it may choose to support the Tobruk Parliament Speaker, Aqeela Saleh. For fear of a direct military confrontation with Turkey.

The site stressed that Egyptian President Abdulfattah Alsisi is determined at all costs to avoid direct confrontation with Turkey, bearing in mind that the Egyptian economy has been severely affected by the “Covid-19” pandemic.

The site stated that Alsisi’s support for Haftar was hesitant for a long time , noting that despite his public support for Haftar, he is seeking a diplomatic and political exit strategy.

The site added that during Haftar’s hosting of the head of the Egyptian Military Intelligence, they were able to reach an agreement on the strategy that should be adopted in the event of an attack on Sirte by the reconciliation government, while Alsisi welcomed Trump’s ceasefire initiative.

The site indicated that Egypt may tend to find common ground with Aqeela Saleh and Interior Minister Fathi Bashagha, but before that, Alsisi must convince the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, Mohammed bin Zayed. Because he still preferred Haftar and the military option.

It is worth noting that Turkish President Rejep Tayyip Erdogan stated that there is communication between Turkish and Egyptian intelligence, which confirms “that there is a misunderstanding,” without providing further details.

Erdogan calls on NATO to assume its responsibilities towards unilateral steps in the eastern Mediterranean.
