Iran said it would withhold its support of the UN-backed Government of National Accord (GNA) until the House of Representatives (HoR), Libya’s parliament based in Tobruk, votes to recognize the GNA.

In an interview with Iranian Fars News Agency on Tuesday, Ambassador Hussein Akbari, Iran’s representative to Libya, said that Iran is waiting for the HoR’s approval of the GNA before it backs the unity government.

“We have to suspend officially recognizing the Libyan government until after the endorsement of the Libyan parliament,” said Akbari.

“The biggest part of Libya’s crisis lies in foreign intervention. It is even more dangerous than the threat of ISIS radicals,” said the Iranian diplomat, emphasizing that the situations in Iraq and Syria are likely to impact events in Libya.

Akbari further stressed that Iranian policy towards Libya is to support the will of the Libyan people in deciding their country’s future.
