Officials from three western nations met on Monday with Libyan Prime Minister Fayez Al-Sarraj, leader of the Government of National Accord (GNA), to discuss the ongoing political instability in Libya.

British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson, US Secretary of State John Kerry, and Italian Foreign Affairs minister Paolo Gentiloni met with Sarraj and two of his deputies to discuss the GNA’s struggle to establish political authority beyond the western side of the country.

General Khalifa Haftar’s rejection of the GNA has held back the House of Representatives (HoR), the Libyan parliament based in Tobruk, from giving the GNA a vote of confidence, which western powers have spoken out against.

However, the international community’s disapproval of Haftar’s actions was put into question in August after the French admitted to having their troops operating in Haftar controlled areas in eastern Libya. Other reports also indicated that US and British forces were also working with the General.

The meeting, which was held at the British Foreign Office in London, took place after a recent attempted coup took place in Tripoli.

No comment was given by the government officials when the meeting began.
