In a video statement released Sunday, the Presidential Guard pledged its allegiance to the General National Congress (GNC) after the group orchestrated a coup against the UN-backed Government of National Accord (GNA) on Friday.

According to the Presidential Guard, the Libyan political agreement, which helped form the GNA, was intended to bring back military rule in Libya.

The statement, which spoke of the Presidency Council’s failure in proving the basic needs of the Libyan people and unify the country, was read in front of the parliament building in the capital.

“We agreed with other revolutionary brigades to restore legitimacy to the GNC, the only legitimate authority in Libya after the Supreme Court ruling in November 2014,” announced the Presidential Guard.

An arrest warrant was issued for the Presidential Guard by the office of Attorney General Siddiq Al-Soor. A similar arrest warrant was also issued for General Khalifa Haftar in 2014 after he attempted a coup against the GNC which was lead by Ali Zidan at the time.
